Selima at CIPD ACE 2016: Review
This year’s CIPD Annual Conference and Exhibition at Manchester Central was another great event which gave Selima the opportunity to meet numerous decision makers looking to transform their organisation’s HR, payroll and workforce management solutions. The event brought together a wide variety of exhibitors, speakers and visitors which lead to a dynamic, atmospheric and productive couple of days for everyone involved.

A common theme this year was a requirement by many organisations to bring together several systems within their operation into a single integrated HR and workforce solution. For many organisations, having a mix of old disparate systems combined with manual processes is inefficient and does not offer organisation-wide business intelligence. That lack of a comprehensive insight across the workforce can be costly and ultimately hamper decision making.
Another popular topic of discussion was improving employee engagement through better use of technology. Employee engagement is important to get the best out of your workforce and to create more of a community feel. Pushing out information to employees via a notice board should be consigned to history in an age where people make significant use of the internet in their everyday lives.

We also had some visitors to the Selima stand talking about employees becoming an increasingly costly asset with factors like increases in the National Living Wage. Effective deployment of labour in the service, hospitality and retail sectors is vital to ensure costs remain within budget but that levels of customer service are maintained to brand standards. Getting the right tool for the job is crucial to delivering on these two important goals.
Recruitment is always a hot topic at every CIPD event and this year was no exception. The market of job boards, applicant tracking systems and other recruitment tools keeps growing but using these systems in isolation can make on-boarding new starters into the HR system a headache. Many companies also now want to look at creating talent pools of pre-assessed candidates to sit on the reserves bench ready to be contacted to fill urgent vacancies. This is particularly the case in service industries.
